Preparing students for the English Language Proficiency Test is a team effort at Villa del Rey Creative Sciences & Arts Magnet School. Principal Kathie Johnson is among those leading daily group sessions with about 80 English as a Second Language students as they prepare for the ELPT testing set for February. The results from the ELPT are instrumental in measuring student progress, supporting reclassification efforts based on grade-appropriate performance and achieving accountability objectives. The "Hip Hop Doc" made rounds to four EBR Schools on Friday 鈥� to promote reading. Dr. Rani Whitfield, a Baton Rouge native, renowned physician and musician, visited Audubon, Broadmoor and LaSalle elementaries to read his new book "RJ Did It" as part of an initiative in partnership with EBR Schools aimed at highlighting the importance of literacy.

Presented by the Society for Science, the nation`s oldest and most prestigious science research competition provides a stage for the country`s best and brightest young scientists to present original research to nationally recognized professional scientists. Chen`s project is titled "Studying the Effects of Distortion on the Hydrodynamics in the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model." Chen was one of 2,471 entrants, the largest entrant pool since 1967. Each scholar will receive $2,000, and their high schools will also receive $2,000 per scholar for STEM-related activities. The 40 finalists will be announced Jan. 23.
